Personal accounts are important and represent actual experiences but that is not journalism, it’s the equivalent of a columnist expressing individual experiences. Good journalists probe and report behaviour, actions, exercise of power and such like. Both have an important role in framing understanding of events but only journalism barrows below. What we need is critical investigation that looks beyond the posturing of power wielders and scrutinises their actions and their motives.

Of course good journalism matters and good journalists should be recognised and commended. But good journalism is rooted in critical investigation. Given the close relationship BASW has with SWE for example, I am unconvinced that a journalist looking into the many conflicts of interest that compromises good governance by SWE would make it for this award. CC treads through the political and personal interests shaping the conduct of social work leaders and I certainly value how we are informed by CC. Perhaps that should be enough.
