James, they aren’t professional organisations so cannot criticise services their peers and collagues run. When we truly have independent entities representing social work, then we’ll have the leaders we and the public deserve. Birmingham childrens services had an even more damning Ombudsman reprimand all the way back in 2014 regarding the treatmentof a child with disability. Ofcourse we heard directors say then that they accepted the outcome, that “lessons would be learnt” and that service improvements would be made and implemented. And here we are again. We need to accept that these decisions are made by social workers and their managers, they have no one else to blame. We need to get rid of the mentality that our practice has to take place “within budget constraints”. That’s not social work as I understand it, its embracing a morally bankrupt ideology.

The silence of Social Work England, BASW and the rest of the Leaders, says all. If registration is about accountability and improving skills why no comment? Perhaps having, BASW in particular, pushed social work into becoming a meaningless bureaucratic activity, they think this represents the pinnacle of good social work. Collude with austerity, promote untested fads like AI, create layers of self regarding ‘managers’, champion a supposed diverse training “community” churning out clones, form filling and resource directed care as standard, timid leaders afraid to challenge power holders, seeing Twitter as a policy forum, the list is longer and even more depressing. I yearn for someone to accept responsibility, promote honesty when we fail and actually remember that we are meant to do our best to improve lives not do the bidding of national and local politicians.
